"I found the people in New Hartford to be extremely friendly," Gunning said. Gunning's search included trips to several old homes, but she always wanted her bed and breakfast to be in New Hartford. The house was built by Edward Chapin for his new wife Mary Ellen Pike. "Originally, it was a private home," Gunning said. The home has 11 rooms, including six bathrooms. Included among the building's sleek original features are the gas lamps, which have since been converted to electricity. Gunning has the original invoices from the construction of the house in a binder in one of the guestrooms. The home was designed by Robert Hill, an architect famous for also designing the Thomaston Opera House, Litchfield County Courthouse and the Civil War monument in Winsted.
